MK-677 is a drug that can improve longevity, bone density, cognitive abilities, strength and metabolism. It has been studied for Alzheimer’s disease, frailty in the elderly and growth hormone deficiency.
Boss peptides MK-677 is also used by athletes to gain a competitive advantage in sports. MK-677 binds to the ghrelin receptor, mimicking the effects of ghrelin. These effects included increased appetite, muscle mass, bone mineral density, angiogenesis, VEGF expression, heart protection and modulation of glucose and energy homeostasis.
MK-677 is often discussed in online forums for its anabolic muscle building estate. It is available over the counter and used by those who wish to increase their growth hormone levels.
However, the clinical studies on this compound are relatively few. In the text below, we will highlight what is known about MK-677 so far.
MK-677, promotes the secretion of growth hormone (GH) and increases the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).
MK-677 increases growth hormone levels, mimicking the action of the hormone ghrelin and binding to one of the ghrelin receptors (GHSRs) in the brain. Activated GHSR stimulates the release of growth hormone from the brain.
GHSR is found in regions of the brain that control appetite, pleasure, mood, biological rhythms, memory and cognition. Therefore, we can expect MK-677 to influence these functions as well. However, so far, clinical studies only describe the effects that MK-677 has on appetite and, as expected, like ghrelin, MK-677 increases it.
A nice thing about MK-677 is that it increases growth hormone levels with little or no increase in other hormones, such as cortisol. Cortisol suppresses the immune system, reduces wound healing and compromises learning and memory, and it is usually not good to have this elevated hormone.
The health benefits of MK-677 look promising. Growth hormone decreases with aging and MK-677 has been shown in randomized, placebo-controlled studies to reverse this decline 1.
This is a classic approach to longevity research. Find out which hormones, neurotransmitters or other signals diminish with aging. Next, check if the restore levels also reverse the effects of aging.
I first became interested in MK-677 from bosspeptides.com because I was researching the relationship between sleep and growth hormone.
Before we talk about the benefits, side effects and dosage of MK-677, let’s go back and discuss growth hormone.
1) MK-677 helps build muscles
MK-677 is often used as an anabolic substance, to increase lean mass, which is to create larger muscles. It is orally active and can be taken once a day. These are all beneficial compared to other growth hormone stimulators.
As mentioned above, MK-677 increases growth hormone and IGF-1 levels. Both growth hormone and IGF-1, in turn, increase muscle mass, muscle strength and reduce body fat.
In healthy obese men, a two-month treatment with MK-677 increased lean body mass and temporarily increased basal metabolic rate (BMR).
2) MK-677 Reduces muscle wasting
In healthy, food-deprived volunteers, MK-677 reversed diet-induced protein loss, which could cause muscle wasting.
In elderly patients with hip fractures, MK-677 improved gait speed, muscle strength and reduced the number of falls.
3) MK-677 increases bone density
Growth hormone (GH) increases bone turnover and ultimately bone density. However, due to the increase in turnover in subjects treated with growth hormone, bone density may initially decrease before increasing. Basically, it takes time (> 1 year) to see bone density increase.
In healthy obese male volunteers, MK-677 increased bone turnover.
In the elderly, MK-677 increased bone formation, measured by osteocalcin, a marker of bone turnover.
In postmenopausal women, MK-677 has increased bone mineral density, which helps increase bone strength and prevent osteoporosis.
