Cannabis has a reputation of causing the munchies, so if it does, why does it seem like marijuana smokers are thinner than those who don’t smoke?
The American Journal of Epidemiology recently published a study that shows an interesting correlation between cannabis use and body weight. It indicates that obesity rates of cannabis users are roughly one-third lower if they smoke at least 3 times per week. This is in comparison to individuals who don’t smoke at all.
The Case for Smoking Pot to Reduce Obesity
Researchers poured through the date from 2 huge national surveys conducted on the American population. These studies together probed 52,000 participants in total. The first survey found that 22% of non-smokers were obese, compared with only 14% of regular pot smokers. The second revealed that 25% of non-smokers from the group were obese, compared with just 17% for regular marijuana users.
The Connection Between Pot Smoking and Low Obesity Risk
The association between smoking marijuana and low obesity risk stayed strong through the surveys, even when adjusting for factors that could only influence health and body fat like gender, age and cigarette usage. However, the weed and weight connection doesn’t actually mean that pot use causes weight loss. Other factors could be responsible for the seeming connection, including the fact that some religious and healthy people might not take drugs, but they are likely to be obese. It could be a matter of a person substituting one behavior (eating too much) for another (smoking weed).
There is much more research that needs to be done to determine why pot smokers are generally thinner, including research on diseases that cause some people to seek out weed in the first place.
