Which Types of Acne have you come across?

It’s very critical and useful to figure out the type of acne we are suffering from. It gives us a focus in our approach towards treating it. when is the last time you have actually figured out the exact type of acne you are suffering from and took precautions respectively?

Acne is a skin condition which is caused by the fluctuations of the hormones and the direct reason being the over activity of the sebaceous glands under the skin. Sebaceous glands under the skin surface make oil (sebum) which keeps skin supple. The sebum comes out through pores (tiny holes). When pores get blocked (by thickening of the skin and dead cells) and when sebum collects under these blocked pores pimples or acne occurs.  Generally, teenagers are affected by acne, but others can experience it too.

Types of Acne

Acne is usually attributed to the following factors

  • Excess oil production
  • Bacterial infection
  • Hormonal disorder
  • Effects of the dead skin cells
  • Ingrown hair

Acne can be majorly divided into two types when we categorize it broadly which are Non-inflammatory acne and Inflammatory acne

The sub-types of acne within these two categories are blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, papules, nodules, and cysts. In some cases, people can be affected by multiple types of acne at once. In this case, a quick visit to a dermatologist is a must.

Non Inflammatory Acne

Non-inflammatory acne, also called comedonal acne, is closer to the surface of the skin and basically consists of the sub-category blackhead and whitehead

Blackheads

When a combination of the sebum and the dead skin cells clog the pores of the skin, blackheads occur from it. Though the pore is being blocked for it the top of the pores stays open. This turns it into a black coloured surface on the skin.

Treatment for blackheads

Salicylic acid works very well for this non-inflammatory acne though this is marketed for acne, in general, for every type of acne. This medicine removes the dead skin cells by treating skin through natural exfoliation.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are also created by the same clogging of skin pores but the top side of the pore remain closed, not open like blackheads. Closed top of the pores made a small bump like structure on the skin.

Treatment for the whiteheads

As the top side is closed, the treatment is quite difficult because the medicine cannot get in touch with it. Salicylic acid can be helpful but the best result can be found with topical retinoids. Now, available retinoid medicine is Adapalene in the market. If the condition becomes serious or the effect of Adapalene is less, then strong retinoid may be required and it should be taken by consulting a dermatologist.

Inflammatory acne

Inflammatory acne as the name suggests are marked by swelling, they also possess redness and bacterial infections. The subcategory consists of papules, pustules, cysts, and nodules.

Papules:  Papules appears small pink or red dome-shaped bumps on the skin. They occur when the clogging causes a hair follicle to become inflamed.

Pustules: Pustules are bumps which are filled with yellowish liquid pus forming a yellow or white center. The pus develops when the white blood cells die and collect inside the papule. Thus, the pus consists of dead cells and debris.

Nodules: Nodules are formed due to the overactive sebaceous (or oil) glands, an abnormal build-up of dead cells within the pore, and overgrowth of acne-causing bacteria

Cysts: It develops when cysts form deep underneath your skin. This can result from a combination of bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells that get trapped in your pores. Also when two or more pustules combines together they form cysts.

Treatment for Inflammatory Acne

Bacteria can also make pore clogging and deep infection under the skin or clogged pores of the skin. This can be a serious and painful infection. Bacterial infection is hard to treat.

Inflammatory Acne falls under severe Acne out of 4 stages of acne, hence a physician visit is the appropriate step for treating it. Depending on your symptoms your Dermatologist may recommend one or combination of prescription medicines.

Medicines or products which contains benzoyl- peroxides, will help to remove or reduce this inflammation from the skin. This can destroy bacteria too. Before using this, consulting a dermatologist is necessary because they will generally prescribe antibiotics with this medicine.

Isotretinoin is considered the best treatment for most forms of severe acne. If your nodular acne is widespread, your dermatologist may very well suggest this treatment.
